Product Information
(2R,3R)-2-Fluoro-3-hydroxybutanedioic acid (FHBA) is a potent inhibitor of bacterial fumarate transport and of succinate dehydrogenase. FHBA is an analogue of malate, which competes with malate for the uptake system and prevents its transport into the cell. The affinity of FHBA for both b. subtilis and fumarate is minimal, but this inhibition effect can be reversed by addition of succinate to the culture medium. FHBA has been shown to inhibit growth in vitro in a number of bacteria, including b. subtilis, E. coli, B. cereus, C. perfringens, P. aeruginosa, M. tuberculosis, S. aureus and S. typhimurium.
