Synonyms:

Description:

Ciprofibrate is a cationic lipid-soluble drug that lowers blood cholesterol levels. It is an analogue of clofibric acid, a peroxisome proliferator that binds to the receptor in the plasma membrane of liver cells and stimulates peroxisomal beta-oxidation. Ciprofibrate is used at dosages of 200 mg/day to 800 mg/day to reduce plasma cholesterol levels in adults with primary hypercholesterolemia. The biological activity of ciprofibrate has been shown in studies involving rats, hamsters, rabbits, and dogs. In these studies, ciprofibrate was found to reduce plasma triglycerides as well as cholesterol levels.
