Description

1-(2-Fluoroethyl)-3-Cyclohexyl-1-Nitrosourea is a nitrogen mustard that inhibits the synthesis of DNA. It is an isomeric mixture of two enantiomers, one with a hydroxy group and the other without. The hydroxy group on the molecule is responsible for its cytotoxic activity. 1-(2-Fluoroethyl)-3-Cyclohexyl-1-Nitrosourea has been used as a diagnostic agent to detect guanine in nucleic acids and can be used as an antitumor agent in combination with other chemotherapeutic drugs. It has also been used as an adjuvant therapy to help treat solid tumors such as breast cancer. This chemical reacts with DNA by nucleophilic attack, where it attacks the 3' position of single stranded DNA, which causes transfer reactions that lead to double stranded breaks in the DNA strands.
