5-Fluoro-1-(2'-Fluoro-2'-Deoxyribofuranosyl)Uracil (5FU) is a pyrimidine analog that is used in the treatment of cancer. It is usually given intravenously to patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. 5FU is an inhibitor of thymidylate synthase and dihydrofolate reductase, which are enzymes involved in DNA synthesis. The drug also inhibits the production of uracil, which results in the inhibition of RNA synthesis and protein synthesis. This leads to tumor cell death by apoptosis or necrosis. 5FU also has been shown to have a direct cytotoxic effect on lung tumor cells, as well as other analogues such as 2'-fluoro-5-methyl-4(3H)-pyrimidinone and 5,5'-difluorouracil (5DFUR).
