- 5-fluoro-6-hydroxydihydropyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione
5-Fluorodihydro-6-Hydroxy-2,4-(1H,3H)-Pyrimidinedione (5FDHP) is a derivative of uracil that is synthesized from toluene. 5FDHP can be used as an anti-tumor agent in the treatment of cancer. The synthesis starts with toluene and hydrofluoric acid, which reacts with urea to produce 5FDHP. This compound reacts with benzene in the presence of hydrochloric acid and a strong acid catalyst to produce fluorine gas and dihydrofluorouracil. Dihydrofluorouracil can then be filtered out and reacted with sodium nitrite in a solution of sulfuric acid and water to form 5FDHP. This reaction occurs because dihydrofluorouracil is thermodynamically more stable than uracil.
