Fluoropyrimidines are a class of drugs that are used to treat cancer. When fluoropyrimidines bind to DNA, they form a covalent bond with the sugar-phosphate backbone by intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Fluoropyrimidines are labeled as radiotracers, which allow them to be tracked using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The sensitivity of this technique is increased when fluoropyrimidines are in the presence of metal ions.
