Fluorine-doped tin selenide is a semiconductor material that has optical and thermal properties. The optical property of this material is its ability to absorb light with a wavelength of 350 nm and emit it in the infrared range at 10 µm. This property provides an opportunity for the development of lasers with a wavelength less than 500 nm. Tin selenide is also used in the production of other semiconductor materials such as indium gallium arsenide, indium phosphide, and gallium arsenide. Tin selenide can be grown by either chemical vapor deposition or molecular beam epitaxy. It has a lattice spacing of 3.1 Å, which is close to the spacing in silicon (3.4 Å).
