5-Fluoro-(1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene) (5FTA) is an aromatic hydrocarbon that belongs to the class of carcinogens. It has been shown to induce tumors in animals and is a protonated form of 5-fluoro-(1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene). The carcinogenic activity of 5FTA is due to its ability to react with DNA at the a-ring position. This reactive form can be metabolized into oxidation products or metabolic products. 5FTA has also been shown to be a potent inhibitor of rat liver microsomes.
