2-Fluoro-4-methoxybenzyl alcohol is an organic compound that is synthesized by the asymmetric synthesis of l-tyrosine, glycine, and benzyl alcohol. It has been shown to be hydrolyzed by alkylating agents such as bromides or propanoic acid. This prodrug has also been shown to have antiviral and antitumor properties in vitro. 2-Fluoro-4-methoxybenzyl alcohol inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the ribosomal RNA of the 50S subunit of the bacterial cell's ribosome. It is also a potent inhibitor of RNA synthesis in mammalian cells. The fluorine atom on the phenyl ring makes it more lipophilic than other fluoroquinolones, which may make it more effective against Gram-positive bacteria.
