This compound is obtained by the reaction of styrene with bromine in the presence of hydrochloric acid and a solvent such as carbon tetrachloride. The product is used in the synthesis of a number of pharmaceuticals, including acetaminophen, esters, and penicillin. 1-Fluoro-4-(1-methylethenyl)benzene can be reduced electrochemically to yield styrene or chlorides. It can also be used as a coupling agent for the formation of heterocycles.
