4-Fluoro-2-methylbenzotrifluoride is a chemical intermediate used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and industrial chemicals. It can also be used as a catalyst for the production of hydrogen fluoride, chloride, or fluoride.
4-Fluoro-2-methylbenzotrifluoride is made by reacting hydrogen fluoride with 2-chlorobenzotrifluoride in the presence of a transition metal catalyst such as nickel. This reaction produces 4-fluoro-2-methylbenzotrifluoride. The fluorine atoms in this molecule are extremely reactive and can form bonds to other molecules such as chlorine or transition metals. When chlorine reacts with 4-fluoro-2-methylbenzotrifluoride, it forms chlorinating agents such as hydrochloric acid or hypochlorous acid.
