9-[(2R,3S,5S)-3-Fluoro-5-(hydroxymethyl)oxolan-2-yl]-3H-purin-6-one (FHA) is a prodrug that contains a hydroxymethyl group. FHA can be hydrolyzed by the enzyme aldehyde oxidase to form 9-[(2R,3S,5S)-3-(hydroxymethyl)oxolan-2-yl]-3H-purin-6-one (FAU). FAU is more potent than FHA and has been shown to inhibit HIV replication in cell culture. FHA was administered to humans and its pharmacokinetic properties were studied. The plasma concentration of FHA increased with time after administration and reached a maximum level at about 3 hours. The maximum concentration of FAU was found at about 1 hour.
