2-Fluoro-N-[(2S,3R,4S,5R)-3,4,5,6-Tetrahydroxy-1-Oxohexan-2-Yl]Acetamide (FLX) is a fatty acid that is hydroxylated in the 2 and 3 positions of the molecule. FLX has been shown to inhibit cellular transformation in cell culture. The mechanism of action of FLX is not known but it may be due to its ability to inhibit DNA synthesis by binding to nucleic acids or protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes. FLX also inhibits bacterial growth and can be used as an antibiotic against gram positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus. It is also able to inhibit the growth of mycobacteria such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The chemical structure of FLX was determined by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and optical sensor
