Atiprimod dihydrochloride is an investigational drug that belongs to a class of anti-infective agents called pyrazoles. Atiprimod binds to the Jak2 protein, which is associated with inflammatory bowel disease, and this binding causes cell death by apoptosis. This drug has been shown to cause eye disorders in animal models of ocular inflammation. It also inhibits epidermal growth factor (EGF) and can be used for the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Atiprimod has been shown to inhibit tumour growth in breast cancer cells and leukemia cells. It also inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines by inhibiting protein synthesis at the mitochondrial membrane potential.
