2-(4-Phenylthiazol-2(3H)-ylidene)malononitrile (BZN) is an antimicrobial agent that belongs to the group of hydrazine compounds. It is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water and methanol. 2-(4-Phenylthiazol-2(3H)-ylidene)malononitrile has shown antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. This compound also inhibits the growth of Gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antimicrobial activity of BZN is due to its action as an inhibitor of protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes.
