Graphite is a mineral that has been used as a model system for the study of thermal expansion. Graphite can be used to measure the thermal expansion of materials and minerals in contact with molten metals. Graphite also has a high chemical stability, which means it does not react with other chemicals. In addition, graphite has low transport properties when compared to metals. The FT-IR spectroscopy of graphite showed a strong frequency shift at 1060 cm−1, which is attributed to the presence of hydroxyl groups. The redox potential of graphite was found to be high (3.2 V) and its structural analysis showed that it had high resistance values (0.36 Ω).
