Glycolic acid homopolymer is a synthetic chemical that has been shown to be a glp-1r agonist. It modulates the glucose-induced release of insulin, and has been used as a model system for pharmacological treatment. Glycolic acid homopolymer is metabolized by glycolate oxidase to form hydrogen fluoride, which can cause oxidative damage to mitochondrial membranes. The reaction solution also contains malonic acid, which reacts with hydrogen fluoride to form dioxetanedione (malonaldehyde). This reaction mechanism leads to the formation of reactive oxygen species and redox potential in the mitochondria. Glycolic acid homopolymer also has metabolic effects on cells, including inhibiting Dapagliflozin (a type 2 diabetes drug), which may be due to its ability to inhibit enzymes involved in glucose metabolism.
