Product Information

Name:
Glycerol-13C3
Synonyms:
  • (13C3)propane-1,2,3-triol
Description:

Glycerol-13C3 is a decarboxylated form of glycerin, which is a carbohydrate. It has been used in pharmaceutical preparations and as an analytical reagent. Glycerol-13C3 has also been used to study the skeleton of glycerin. The chemical shift at 13C for this compound is due to the presence of two carbons that are substituted with hydroxyl groups, one on each side of the backbone.
Glycerol-13C3 can be acetylated to produce 3-O-acetylglycerol or 2,3-di-O-acetylglycerol, which are laxatives commonly used in the treatment of constipation. Acetylation prevents the enzyme lipase from breaking down fats into fatty acids and glycerin, thereby increasing fecal fat excretion.
Glycerol-13C3 can also be hydroxylated by alcohol extract to produce propionate or lact
