Ganciclovir is an antiviral drug that inhibits the replication of DNA. It is a prodrug, which is activated after acetylation by the enzyme cytosine deaminase. Ganciclovir is converted to its active form, ganciclovir monophosphate, by phosphorylation catalyzed by viral thymidine kinase or cellular kinases. This drug has been shown to have significant inhibitory effects on DNA polymerase, reverse transcriptase, and ribonuclease H in vitro. Ganciclovir also inhibits the growth of certain bacteria and fungi that cause environmental pollution. Ganciclovir has been shown to be effective against various strains of human herpesviruses, including Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), varicella zoster virus (VZV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), human herpes
