Glyceryl iodide is an organic compound with the molecular formula CH3(CH2)4OI. It is a colorless crystalline solid that is soluble in water and other solvents. Glyceryl iodide has a high degree of toxicity to rats. It was not carcinogenic in mice, but did induce tumors of the bronchial epithelium in rats. The LD50 for glyceryl iodide in rats is about 1g/kg, which is much higher than the LD50 for glycerin (0.5g/kg).
Glyceryl iodide can be used as a substitute for trinitrate or diacetate, because it has similar effects on the heart and blood vessels. It also has similar effects on lipid metabolism and bronchial cells as glycerol triacetate, although its toxicity limits its use in vivo studies.
