Guaiacol carbonate is a hydrophobic, reactive molecule that can be derived from acetylsalicylic acid. It is used in the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride and as a wood preservative. Guaiacol carbonate has been shown to degradate into methyl alcohol, terpenes, and malonic acid. This product also encompasses the conjugates of fatty acids with guaiacol carbonate which are soluble in water. These micelles are stabilized by hydrogen bonding between the hydrophobic guaiacol carbonate and the hydrophilic carboxylic acid groups of the fatty acid.
