Gatifloxacin hydrochloride is the salt form of gatifloxacin, which is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits the DNA gyrase enzyme, an enzyme essential for bacterial replication. Gatifloxacin has been shown to be more active against drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis than other antibiotics. Gatifloxacin also inhibits methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens, the bacteria responsible for respiratory infections. The mechanism of action of Gatifloxacin is by blocking the function of the enzyme topoisomerase II, and thus DNA replication in bacteria.
