Ginkgolic acid is a chemical pesticide that belongs to the group of diterpenes. It has been shown to increase energy metabolism in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. Ginkgolic acid also inhibits apoptosis and upregulates the expression of proteins involved in the pathway by surface methodology. The biological studies have shown significant cytotoxicity, with an IC50 value of 1.5 µM, which is greater than that observed for other diterpenes such as fructus ligustri. Ginkgo biloba extract has been shown to have acute toxicities and should be used cautiously due to its potential for hepatotoxicity and neurotoxicity.
