Description

Z-gln(Trt)-OH is a chalcone with a 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde and a triphenylmethanol residue. This compound has been found to be effective in the treatment of brain tumors, as well as in other cancers. Z-gln(Trt)-OH inhibits cellular proliferation by inhibiting the uptake of amino acids into cells, which blocks protein synthesis and causes cell death. The mechanism is based on the formation of an isoxazolidine that reacts with the amino acid methionine to form an unstable intermediate that reacts with ATP to form adenosine monophosphate (AMP) and then breaks down into 5'-AMP, which inhibits cellular metabolism. Z-gln(Trt)-OH also has shown cytotoxic effects against hepatoma cells in tissue culture and glioma cells in tissue culture.
