Glycine is a non-essential amino acid. It is the simplest amino acid and contains only one functional group, the carboxylate. Glycine can be synthesized in the laboratory by various methods, including the reaction of ammonia with formaldehyde followed by hydrolysis of the resulting ammonium carbamate. This product can be used as a solvent for anions, such as cyanide and thiolates, or to react with carboxylates to form ethers and carboxylic acids. Glycine also participates in condensation reactions with amines to form peptides and acylating reactions with nucleophiles to form glycinates.
