Gly-Gln-OH·H2O is a synthetic peptide hormone that has been shown to have therapeutic properties for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. It inhibits bacterial translocation in the intestinal tract by binding to the IL-2 receptor in white blood cells. Gly-Gln-OH·H2O was originally isolated from a human plasma sample, but can also be synthesized using the analytical method of high performance liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry. The physiological function of Gly-Gln-OH·H2O is not yet known, but it has been shown to increase mitochondrial membrane potential and inhibit energy metabolism in animal cell cultures. Gly-Gln-OH·H2O can also be used as a fluorescent probe for detection of proteins and peptides by lc-ms/ms methods.
