Z-L-glutamic acid gamma-methyl ester is a linker that can be used to attach drugs to hyaluronic acid, which is a large molecule found in the synovial fluid. Hyaluronic acid is composed of alternating D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine molecules. The presence of these alternating sugars makes it possible for Z-L-glutamic acid gamma-methyl ester to covalently bond with the molecule. This linker has been shown to be effective in treating arthritis by reducing inflammation and pain through its ability to reduce cathepsins and other enzymes in the synovial fluid that are responsible for tissue degradation. The use of this linker also increases the duration of intraarticular activity because there is less degradation of the drug by enzymes.
