Z-Gly-Phe-NH2 is a synthetic peptide that binds to the calcium ionophore sequestered in the endoplasmic reticulum of the Xenopus oocyte. It inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the enzyme and preventing its activity. Z-Gly-Phe-NH2 is a competitive inhibitor of ouabain, which has been shown to bind to the same site on the enzyme as calcium ions. This compound has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in vitro and in vivo, but not protein synthesis in plasma proteins or carboxypeptidase activity. It also inhibits the response of Xenopus oocytes to Ca2+ ionophores, but does not affect Ca2+ responses mediated by plasma proteins.
