Description:

Glutathione-diethyl ester (GDE) is a reactive molecule that can be reduced to glutathione (GSH) in vivo. GDE has been shown to have DNA binding activity and can act as a model system for nuclear dna. It is also an antioxidant with transport properties that are studied by fluorescence analysis in cellular systems. GDE has been shown to reduce oxidative damage to DNA, which may be due to its ability to scavenge free radicals. This molecule also has antioxidative activity against human macrophages, cancer cells, and neuronal death caused by oxidative stress. Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) can inhibit the pro-oxidant effects of GDE on mitochondrial membrane potential, suggesting that it may have pro-oxidant activities as well.
