L-Glutamic acid gamma-(alpha-naphthylamide) is a fluorescent probe that has been used to detect the activity of gamma-glutamyl transferase in tissues and cells. It binds to the enzyme, which is involved in the metabolism of amino acids, and this binding can be visualized using fluorescence microscopy. L-Glutamic acid gamma-(alpha-naphthylamide) is also an enzyme substrate analog that can be used for determining the activity of other enzymes such as erythrocyte glutathione reductase and cytochrome P450. This compound is able to cross cell membranes, making it useful for examining cellular metabolism.
