Glycine isopropyl ester hydrochloride (GIEH) is a fatty acid that has been shown to have inotropic properties. GIEH has been used as a pharmaceutical formulation for the treatment of virus-induced hepatitis, and has also been shown to be active against HIV infection. GIEH binds with high affinity to the viral envelope glycoprotein gp120, which may lead to its antiviral effects. This drug may also inhibit the synthesis of phospholipids, which are necessary for cellular membrane function. The binding of GIEH with fatty acids may lead to an increased utilisation of lipids within cells, thereby leading to decreased levels of triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood.
