Vancomycin hydrochloride is a semi-synthetic antibiotic that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls by binding to the terminal D-alanine residue of peptidoglycan. It has been shown to have neutralizing effects against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Clostridium perfringens. Vancomycin hydrochloride has also been shown to inhibit the synthesis of DNA in cultured cells and prevent cell division. This drug is used as an antidote for bacterial infections caused by penicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other species. It binds to specific enzymes in the bacterial membrane that are essential for cell wall synthesis, thereby blocking the production of peptidoglycan.
