Product Information

Name:
N-Heptyl isocyanate
Synonyms:
  • Heptyl isocyanate
  • 1-Isocyanatoheptane
  • Heptane, 1-Isocyanato-
Description:

N-Heptyl isocyanate (NHC) is a cross-linking agent that can react with an amine group to form an ether linkage. It is used in the production of polyurethanes and other polymers. In the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid, NHC reacts by nucleophilic substitution to form a molecule with a new reactive hydroxy group. This reaction mechanism has been shown to be potent enough to inhibit polymerization reactions such as those used in film coating. The hydroxy group also reacts with aliphatic hydrocarbons, which are molecules composed of only carbon and hydrogen atoms. The reaction between NHC and hexyl isocyanate (HIC), for example, leads to the formation of eseroline, which has been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory properties.
