N-Hexyl isothiocyanate (HITC) is a natural compound that is a potent activator of the receptor for the innate immune system TLR4. It has been shown to induce autophagy in HL-60 cells and murine hepatoma cells. HITC also activates c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38, resulting in phosphorylation of c-Jun and inhibition of the transcription factor c-jun. However, this compound does not activate NF-κB and does not appear to have any effect on cell cycle progression or apoptosis.
N-Hexyl isothiocyanate is an excellent chemical model system because it has been extensively studied with regards to its biological properties and receptor activity, as well as its structural analysis. This compound also has been shown to be effective against human leukemia cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis at the ribosome level by inhib
