3-Hexyne is a carbonyl group that has anti-infective properties. It has been shown to be an organometallic compound that can form a coordination complex with metals such as copper and zinc. The conformational properties of 3-hexyne have been found to be similar to those of other antibacterial agents such as chloramphenicol and erythromycin. A molecule of 3-hexyne can react with another molecule of 3-hexyne in the presence of an organic base, forming an isomeric mixture. This reaction mechanism may account for the high values observed in antimicrobial activity studies using this compound. 3-Hexyne also reacts with fatty acids, which may account for its ability to inhibit bacterial growth on surfaces. This property may also be due to hydrogen bonding interactions with fatty acid chains on the surface of bacteria cells or chemical biology interactions at the level of membrane lipids.
