5-Hydroxyindole (5-HIA) is a fatty acid that is found in the brains of humans and animals. It has been shown to have carcinoid syndrome, which is characterized by an increased concentration of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in the blood. The 5-HT binds to specific receptors on cells and activates them, leading to an increase in the production of proteins such as β-endorphin, vasoactive intestinal peptide, and substance P. 5HIA also has been used to determine whether or not patients with diabetes mellitus have a high level of serum C-reactive protein (CRP), which indicates the possibility of coronary artery disease. This molecule can be used as a marker for kidney function because it is secreted into urine by glomerular filtration. It can also be used as a marker for inflammation because it is found in high concentrations in patients with chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis
