Hordenine is a natural product that can be found in plants, such as barley and wheat. It has been shown to have a protective effect against skin cancer in mice. Hordenine has also been shown to inhibit the growth of human skin cells by decreasing the expression of matrix metalloproteinases, which are enzymes that promote the breakdown of proteins. This activity may be due to its ability to inhibit dopamine synthesis and binding to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) DNA. Hordenine is also an antioxidant and may provide therapeutic benefits for patients with diseases related to oxidative injury, such as diabetes mellitus and Parkinson’s disease. Hordenine can be extracted from crystalline cellulose using a titration calorimetry technique.
