1,1,1,3,3,3-Hexafluoro-2-methylisopropanol (HFIP) is an organic solvent that belongs to the group of alkali metal alcohols. It is a colorless liquid with a boiling point of approximately 120°C and a flashpoint of approximately -60°C. The primary use for HFIP is as an efficient method for separating molybdenum from chloride in x-ray structures. HFIP has also been shown to be thermally stable up to temperatures of 200°C. This property makes it useful in the crystallization of molecules such as dimethylol propionic acid.
