Holmium(III) trifluoromethanesulfonate is a chiral, cyclic compound with two phenyl substituents. It is used to prepare optically active methylated benzene derivatives. Holmium(III) trifluoromethanesulfonate can be used for the allylation of aldehydes and ketones. The yields are high and the reaction is selective. This compound has been shown to catalyze the hydrolysis of esters and amides, as well as the synthesis of alcohols from aldehydes or ketones. Holmium(III) trifluoromethanesulfonate has been studied in x-ray crystallography and was found to be a ligand that binds metal ions.
