7-Hydoxy-4-methyl-2(1H)-quinolone (7OHMQ) is a protonated quinolone derivative that can be used as a new generation of antibacterial agents. 7OHMQ has a lower toxicity to mammalian cells and higher potency than the existing antibiotics. It was found to have a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The mechanism of action of 7OHMQ is not yet fully understood. The fluorescence emission spectrum of 7OHMQ shows that it is excited by radiation at wavelengths below 300 nm and emits light in the visible range. It also has an orthorhombic crystal structure with diffraction maxima at 2.3 Å and 5.5 Å, which corresponds to the x-ray diffraction data for 7OHMQ.
