2-Hydroxy-N,N-dimethylacetamide (2HDA) is a sulfoxide that has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of the enzyme sulfoxide reductase. It is used to inhibit the formation of toxic sulfoxides, which are produced by the metabolism of certain drugs and pesticides. 2HDA has also been shown to bind to ganglioside GM1 in the brain, which may be responsible for its nonselective inhibition of both acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase. The binding site on ganglioside GM1 is located at a hydrophobic pocket in the molecule that contains an intramolecular hydrogen bond. This strategy has been analysed using molecular modelling techniques and optimization studies. 2HDA can function as a chiral ligand for carbohydrate receptors and it can produce conjugates with other molecules such as saccharides or amino acids. This compound also has conformational effects on
