4-Hydrazino-2-phenylquinazoline is an antimicrobial agent that is a white crystalline solid. It has been shown to have antibacterial properties against gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The mechanism of action for this drug is not well understood, but it has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of d-galactose in Escherichia coli. 4-Hydrazino-2-phenylquinazoline also inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the cell wall and inhibiting protein synthesis. The acetyl derivative of 4-hydrazino-2-phenylquinazoline was found to be more potent than its parent compound due to increased solubility in organic solvents. This could be advantageous for pharmaceutical production since it would allow for higher yields with less solvent waste.
