Procaine is a synthetic drug that has been used as an anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic. It binds to the enzyme hydroxylase, which is responsible for the conversion of procaine to deoxyepinephrine. Procaine has been shown to inhibit the formation of vasicinone from deoxyepinephrine, but does not affect the production of adrenaline or noradrenaline. The electron microscopy analysis showed that this drug inhibits the synthesis of dendritic spines. This inhibition is due to its ability to inhibit phospholipase A2 (PLA2) and protein kinase C (PKC) activity in neurons. Procaine also inhibits dendritic spine formation by binding to PLA2 and PKC and preventing their activation.
