7-Hydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-4H-chromen-4-one (7HDMCD) is an isomer of malic acid. It is synthesised from chloroform and bromination of acetylacetone. This reaction sequence starts with the condensation of acetylacetone with 2 moles of formaldehyde to form a methyl ester. The methyl ester is then reacted with sodium methoxide to produce a diol. The diol can undergo hydrogenation to form the desired product 7HDMCD.
