7-Hydroxy-4,8-dimethyl-2H-chromen-2-one is a synthetic compound that has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. It can be used as a test compound for cancer research and development. 7-Hydroxy-4,8-dimethyl-2H-chromen-2-one inhibits the production of enzymes in the body by reacting with the methylene group of their active sites. This inhibition leads to less radical scavenging and an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can cause damage to cells. The reaction mechanism is not yet fully understood but it is known that this compound binds to chloride ions, which are necessary for enzyme activity. 7HMCD was synthesized by coupling methylene with coumarin derivatives and then reacting them with hydroxyl radicals. The enantiomers of 7HMCD have different optical properties, including absorption spectra and xray crystal structures.
