7-Hydroxy-8-methyl-4-phenyl-2H-chromen-2-one is a synthetic analog of psoralens. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of coumarins. 7-Hydroxymethyl chromanones are synthesized from the reaction of acetoacetic acid with 7,8 methylenedioxybenzene which can be obtained by reacting phenol with formaldehyde followed by hydrolysis. The synthesizing and modifying of these compounds have been shown to be difficult due to their low reactivity.
