3-Hydroxy-3-methylbutanenitrile (HMB) is a reactive compound that is eliminated by the kidneys. It is also known as 3-hydroxypropionitrile, which is a cyclic compound with three hydroxyl groups. The kinetics of HMB's elimination can be described using the Michaelis-Menten equation and its half-life in the body can be calculated from the kinetic data given. The elimination of HMB has been shown to be dependent on cerebral blood flow and its concentration in brain tissue. HMB also induces depression in animals, caused by its ability to inhibit oligopeptide production in rats. HMB was first synthesized by reacting isobutylene with cyanide and it has been shown that this reaction produces an optically active product with a boiling point of 94°C at 0.1 mmHg pressure. This reaction proceeds through a unimolecular mechanism, because it does not require any other react
