5-Hydroxypyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione is a reactive molecule that can be generated by the oxidation of uridine. It has been shown to cause neuronal death in rats and is associated with oxidative damage to DNA. The mechanism of action for 5-hydroxypyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione as an oxidant is not known but it may react with DNA bases and form adducts that are susceptible to hydrolysis. This molecule may also react with malonic acid or hydroxyl groups on proteins. 5-Hydroxypyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione has been shown to react with dna duplexes and cleave the dna at the site of adduct formation.
