4-Hydroxy-1-phenylquinolin-2(1H)-one (4HPQ) is a novel chemotherapeutic agent that inhibits the tyrosine kinase domain of the epidermal growth factor receptor. It has been shown to have in vitro anticancer activity against cancer cells expressing this receptor and proton irradiation. 4HPQ inhibits primary amines, such as tyrosine kinases and thiourea, which are involved in the activation of cell division. The anticancer activity of 4HPQ may be due to its ability to bind to DNA at high affinity and inhibit tumor cell division by preventing tumour cells from dividing.
