N-(2-Hydrazino-2-oxoethyl)-N-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethanesulfonamide (HNEES) is a basic protein that can be used as a transfection agent. It binds to DNA and is able to alter the expression of genes. HNEES has been shown to have chinese herb activity, for example in the inhibition of iron homeostasis, which may be related to its ability to inhibit ferrochelatase and other enzymes involved in heme synthesis. HNEES also has carcinogenic potential in animal models and may cause side effects such as cardiac arrhythmias. HNEES is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to ribosomes and preventing protein synthesis, thereby preventing cell division. It can be used as a model system for physiological functions such as cardiac function, because it is able to bind with high affinity to porcine myocardium membranes.
